Well, after their rough showing against the Buckley Griffins on Monday, the Bruins, unfortunately, didn't fare much better against Milken. In fact, they fared worse. Geffen Academy, although they were outplayed from start to finish, managed to keep the first half competitive, keyed once again by Junior Stevan Markovic, who scored 10 first-half points. Senior Noah Saucedo also had 6 points and 5 rebounds, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of the first half to pull the Bruins within 13, at a score of 32-19. The issue for the Bruins was, neither of those two players ever scored again. In fact, Geffen Academy only managed to score a mere five points until the final horn, while Milken, on the other hand, more than doubled their first half total.
Throughout the game, it was clear the Bruins were missing something more than offense. Although both Coach Devon and Coach Marshann tried numerous times to inject life into their squad, the energy that has often sparked the Bruins in the past was simply not there. While both Senior Nathan Muhumuza and Markovic are terrific players, they aren't exactly the vibrant or brash leaders that say, Joaquin Torres-Lara was two seasons ago. (Torres-Lara, of course, called out the team after a particularly abysmal performance, a reckoning that fired up the team). I would argue that the vocal leader of the roster right now would actually be sophomore and leader of the Geffen "Basketball Club" Rosstin Markzar, whose lively and spirited personality often sparks the team. However, it's clear that the Bruins may need some of their seniors to be more vociferous, and perhaps that was discussed after Tuesday's loss.
According to my sources, Markovic, Saucedo, and Senior Jordy Ohebsion held a private, three-man meeting in the back of Yellow Pacer bus #95 around approximately 5:00 PST last night. While the exact contents of that meeting are unknown, a source told me that the discussion centered around team performance. Perhaps we'll see what happens today, as Geffen Academy is scheduled to take on the Sherman Oaks Knights at the De Toledo High School at 4:30 Pacific Time. It's a third straight game for the Bruins, who will be looking for the first win of this young, young season.
