Bruins (Boys) Beat Wildwood Wolves 53-40, Officially Clinch Spot in CIF Playoffs

It wasn't their best, but it was enough.

The Bruins (Boys) eked out a win they had to have Monday night against the pesky Wildwood Wolves, whom they'd beaten about six weeks earlier at the Willows Community School. With the juggernaut Rolling Hills Preparatory and Senior Night celebrations looming on the horizon, clinching their playoff spot Monday was a must.

The Wolves came out with a ferocity and attention to detail that had not been there the last time these two squads faced off. While it was clear that Geffen Academy had the more talented team, Wildwood seemed to come up with every loose ball and had many bounces go their way. But buoyed by Nathan Muhumuza's stellar first half of 17 points and 8 rebounds, the Bruins held an eleven-point advantage at the break. Muhumuza told me after the game that he's "feeling more and more like his old self." The senior guard, after missing the first four games of the year, has scored at least 20 points in seven of the nine games he's played in this year.

Nathan Muhumuza (#24) scores an "And-1" in the 1st Quarter of Game Vs. Wildwood 2/3

On the other side of the coin, it's been a tough going for junior forward Stevan Markovic as of late. Team sources with knowledge of the situation told me yesterday that Markovic has been under the weather. He scored eight points against the Wolves, his lowest total of the year. Yet Markovic's contributions to the team this season cannot be ignored. He's put up three games with 29 or more points and is still the most electric scorer in Geffen Academy history. As the Bruins barrel towards the playoffs, it remains paramount that Markovic get it going on the offensive end like he is capable of for the Bruins to advance in the postseason.

In the second half, the Wolves started to run out of gas, and along with Muhumuza, Senior Jordan Ohebsion helped dispatch Wildwood. Ohebsion finished with 12 points and 6 rebounds, and it's his fifth consecutive game with double digits in the scoring column. He's playing his best basketball at just the right time of the year.

Tomorrow, from 3 to 5 PM, the Bruins will play what is most likely their last home game of the year and will honor their three seniors: Muhumuza, Ohebsion, and sharpshooter Noah Saucedo. (It's also my last home game covering the team.) While the game against Rolling Hills Prep, which once could've been for a league title, is now just a tune-up for the playoffs, the Bruins are still going to do everything they can to try to win at UCLA's Student Activity Center one last time for their seniors. I'll have you covered on what happens and what happens in the proceeding Bruins (Girls) basketball game against Rolling Hills Prep, which IS for the league championship. I'll also keep you updated on both teams' playoff runs. Until then, folks.
