Following their opening loss to St. Pius a couple of weeks earlier, the Bruins were desperate to bounce back, and they had a tremendous opportunity Tuesday night. Facing CAMS in the second game of a double-header, both squads came out a little bit flat-footed, as the teams combined to score a mere ten points in the opening period. However, once Geffen Academy had found the flow of the game, the Bruins started to assert their dominance. Riding large first half performances from Junior Ciahna McNairy and Freshman Mion Kamiya, Geffen found themselves up a dozen at halftime. CAMS, who was struggling taking care of the basketball and had displayed an inability to stop the Bruins out in transition, were looking to the break as an opportunity to find answers.
However, when the third period began, CAMS found themselves just as lost for answers as they had been in the first sixteen minutes. Despite employing a strategy to limit Kamiya and McNairy, they found no success in stopping Junior guard Maddie Sugimoto, who had a monster third quarter, scoring ten points and effectively facilitating the ball to her teammates. CAMS, who put up a goose egg throughout most of the third, found themselves facing an insurmountable deficit heading into the fourth and final quarter. From there, the Bruins coasted towards the finish line, and were never in any danger throughout the remainder of the contest. The Geffen Academy Varsity Girls Bruins are now 1-1 on the season, and will attempt to extend their winning streak to two games on Thursday.
