Geffen Academy Girls Basketball Falls 44-26 in Season Opener, as Offensive Firepower Plagues Bruins

Entering the 2023-24 season, the Bruins sported a core of both incumbent stars and new faces to attempt to lead them to victory facing off against St. Pius. Juniors Ciahna McNairy and Maddie Sugimoto, who had consistently accounted for the vast majority of scoring the previous year, went cold from the field during the contest. The two combined for a mere dozen points, and were forced to rely on new faces to help support the load offensively. Freshman Mion Kamiya stepped up in a large way, putting up ten points and six rebounds to help keep the Bruins within striking distance for most of the second half. But the three point shooting from St. Pius kept Geffen Academy at bay; every time the Bruins attempted to make a run, they were greeted by a barrage of threes by St. Pius and Geffen Academy was kept at arm’s length.

Senior Maya Danovitch, who totaled four points and five rebounds, struggled from the field, but was able to provide key passes and hustle plays, and her buckets were very timely. Freshman Isabella Michels also snatched eight rebounds, which were instrumental as St. Pius was quite adept at crashing the offensive glass. But despite their efforts in many facets of the game, the Bruins found themselves down big as the fourth quarter commenced. St. Pius could simply coast through many other aspects on the floor, as their hot shooting and box-and-one defense bewildered the inexperienced Bruins. Although Geffen Academy tried to make a miraculous comeback in the final eight minutes, the Bruins had simply dug too large a hole. They will try to obtain their first win of the year against CAMS on Tuesday, November 28th.
