As Geffen Academy heads into its final weeks and finals of the semester, elsewhere, the year is just beginning. The Geffen Academy Bruins played their 5th game taking on New Roads in a rematch of a game played less than a fortnight ago. Previously, guard Noah Saucedo hit a game winning three to sink New Roads, but this time it was a different story. New Roads had great perimeter shooting, knocking down 8 triples to keep pace with superstar freshman Stevan Markovic, who put up 21 points and 7 rebounds throughout the game.
Markovic has been arguably the best player for the Bruins in this young season, providing consistent scoring on the offensive end while making the surprise offensive rebounds not typically expected from his position. Unfortunately, the Bruins had a very hard time stopping New Roads on defense in the second half, as their guards penetrated the defense of Geffen Academy and then either finished, kicked it to an outside shooter, or made an extra pass to a big man for a lay-up. Despite a run in the final two minutes, it was too little too late.
Geffen Academy's next game will be on Catalina Island at Avon High School as part of a triple-header with the JV Bruins and Girls Varsity Bruins. You can expect articles covering those games as well, for a total of three in one day! The Bruins will look for a sweep to bounce back from the sour taste in their mouth left after this one, and with one the next day, a quick turnaround is certainly appreciated.
